As Chair of the Mississippi Homebuyer Education Center-Mississippi Housing Initiative (MHI), I’m excited about the strides we’ve been able to make in preparing clients for homeownership. The network we’ve established with our partners and affiliates has been instrumental in helping us to continue to provide a high quality of service to our partners, affiliates and clients. Through our partnership with the FDIC, we are now able to offer the “Money Smart” money management curriculum. This has become a major component of our education program, and has allowed us to help borrowers and homeowners address other aspects of their financial well being.

I remember how proud I was when I purchased my first home. The satisfaction and security that comes with homeownership is one that each of us should be given the opportunity to attain. Yet there are still too many Mississippians who have not been able or given the opportunity to achieve their dream of homeownership. It is time for us to do things different. Let’s take some chances on giving people an opportunity. I happen to think, that through the education and networks that we’ve been able to set up at MHI we now have the catalyst for making a difference in peoples’ lives.

Our organization stands ready to take on this challenge. If we are going to make a difference in the lives of others, we will need to do things differently. In the delivery of our services, we will need to be more accountable to all parties involved. As we transition into this new mode of operation, we are going to need your cooperation and assistance. Clients should not just look at the homeownership class as an end all program. Education is a process, and it is this process that we will need assistance from our partners and affiliates. As a society, if we cannot get the lower income of our population moving, then the upper and middle class will not be progressing. We are only as stable as the least stable of us. Working with you to catapult this upward movement is my vision of what can happen when we keep an open mind, take on the tough challenges and work together. I look forward to working with each of you and continuing to make a difference. Let’s get started!
